This article was originally published in Clinica

Executive Summary

There are some 3.2 million new cases of skin cancer per year in Europe, according to figures released by the European Commission in a recent campaign aimed at promoting the correct use of sunscreen products. Estimates made by the WHO's International Agency for Research on Cancer indicate that there were 3.2 million new cases diagnosed in 2006 - excluding non-melanoma skin cancer - and 1.7 million deaths from the cancer. Of the new cases, 53% were among men and 47% among women. In the UK, over 65,000 cases of skin cancer were reported in 1999, and more than 2,000 people die from skin cancer each year. France's Institut National du Cancer reports that the number of melanomas has tripled over the last 20 years, to 7,000 new cases per year.
