In what could influence patient management, a New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM) study reports that breast cancer patients carrying either of the BRCA gene variants are at no higher risk of dying from the disease than non-carriers with breast cancer. In addition, carriers of the BRCA 1 mutation were more likely to respond well to chemotherapy than non-carriers.
