Executive Summary
Surgical devices developed by Novare Surgical Systems have permitted what the company claims are the first ever laparoscopic nephrectomy - kidney removal - that left no visible scar. The surgery was performed using Novare's RealHand high dexterity (HD) instruments, which are designed to exactly mirror the surgeon's hand movements. The single incision was made through the patient's navel, leaving no scar. Dr Jeffrey Cadeddu, associate professor of urology and radiology at UT Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, Texas, performed the surgery. He said: "Surgeons can do a procedure using only one hole, and they can hide the hole in a cosmetically advantageous or less painful location." The instruments received FDA 510(k) clearance in June.
