Japan's June 1 effective date for its Pharmaceutical Affairs Law has presented a mixed bag for the drug industry, patients and a variety of new entrants into the business of selling medicines. Although the new law expanding some over-the-counter sales to convenience stores and shutting down a lot of online sales has claimed winners and losers, Daigen Pharmaceutical is experiencing a 50 percent increase in orders for its online products, such as an athlete's foot treatment. Daigen is benefiting, however, from a two-year window allowing continued online sales of drugs to people who already had been buying them before June 1.
