Start-up company Illumina Inc. is developing a platform that uses fiber optic beaded array technology for genomics, proteomics, pharmaceutical screening, medical diagnostics, and optical olfaction.

Fiber optics, with the capacity to transmit huge amounts of light, has quickly and quite successfully found its way into many marketplaces. The technology has been used extensively, particularly in the telecommunications industry, for the delivery of data. More recently, its entry into the medical arena has enabled medical imaging advances, improved and innovative surgical instruments and procedures, and now enabled a developing platform for the discovery of novel drugs.
