The hospital point-of-care testing (POCT) market presents a conundrum for manufacturers. Demand for it is growing—but not as fast as many proponents of the field expected. The premise—easy-to-use tests performed near the patient will improve test result turnaround time and thus clinical decision-making and ultimately outcomes—is sound. But finding the right technology and applications in which a rapid test result is worth the trade-off of higher cost and more labor has been a challenge.
