The San Raffaele Foundation pioneered technology transfer in Italy in 1993, in a hostile environment. It was six years before the Italian government made any attempt to promote such activity or make it acceptable to scientists and the public. Early stage funding was scarce. Entrepreneurs were an even rarer breed in Italy than they are today. In spite of these difficult conditions, San Raffaele has created three start-ups using its own funds.
